Click Beetles

We get calls during the summer from people finding long, narrow, very hard-bodied brown or black beetles in their houses.  The unique thing about these beetles is that they can "click" to right themselves if flipped on their backs.  That's why they are called click beetles.

Click beetles feed on various plants as adults and feed on plant roots as larvae.  The larvae are called wireworms.  

Click beetles are not considered pests outside of certain agricultural situations.  They are harmless to people and can't become established indoors.  

Adults appear occasionally in houses either because they emerged from the soil under the house or were attracted to lights at night and found their way inside.

Our  basic pest quarterly service is effective against them if they cross an area we have treated.  It may take an hour or two for them to die.

Dung Beetles

They come to lights at night. We can't stop that. You can turn off exterior lights at night, switch to led lights, or use motion activation on exterior lights to minimize the problem. Scott said he can't see from pictures if they have those claw-like like front legs that dung beetles have. Regardless, the same solutions listed above would work for any June beetle or other Scarabidae that's coming to lights at night.
