House Flies

General Information
House flies lay eggs in groups of around 75 eggs on moist decaying plant or animal matter. They can lay as many as 500 eggs in their lifetime. The larvae are called maggots and hatch from the eggs around 1 day after being laid. The larvae feed on the decaying material for around a week and then transform in to pupae. They remain in the pupal stage for about another week before hatching into adult flies. Adults live for around 30 days, repeating the cycle. Flies are most often a problem in our area during June to September.
Common fly calls
We occasionally get calls for maggots on the floor in the kitchen. This problem usually arises when a fly has laid eggs between a trash bag and the trash bag container. The homeowner removes the bag, sets it on the ground to tie it, then carries it out. When they return, there are maggots on the floor. No control is needed. This is a one-time, short term situation that will resolve itself within a few hours. The client can sweep up the larvae and throw them outside.
Another situation where we get a calls for flies indoors will involve a large number of flies suddenly appearing in a room. This usually happens when a rodent or other animal has died in the wall near the room or some food item has been lost in the room. A fly laid eggs on the item and now the adults are emerging. All the adults will emerge within the same day, usually. No control is needed. This is a one-time, short-term event that will subside within a day or two.
Large numbers of flies outside. Flies can grow into huge populations during the summer. They make it difficult to enjoy our outdoor environment. In this case, clients should correct the conducive conditions outlined below. We also can offer control in certain situations - see below.
Conducive Conditions
Conditions that can lead to fly problems mainly involve trash and/or human or animal excrement, along with high moisture. Care should be taken to empty trash frequently and maintain good sanitation around the house. Animal feces should be removed from landscaping regularly. Sewage systems should be regularly maintained.
Control
Correcting conducive conditions is the best method of control.
Fly light traps are available to help with reducing the numbers of adults indoors. They are often used in commercial facilities.
There are a number of baits that are available for reducing the number of adults. Some of the baits are extremely effective. However, they don't last for more than a few days and require frequent re-application.
