Scorpion, Bee, and Wasp Stings
A severe and dangerous allergic reaction is possible with exposure to virtually anything, including insect bites and stings. It is called anaphylaxis and occurs within seconds or minutes of exposure. This is different than a typical allergic reaction in that there is a reaction in your whole body rather than just near the site of exposure. Tissues in different parts of the body release histamine and other substances. This causes the airways to tighten and leads to other symptoms. If you have difficulty breathing, call 911.
Many people are surprised to learn that the scorpions we have in Central Texas are not deadly. Their sting contains a neurotoxin and creates a sensation of pain without causing any cell damage. Since there is no actual damage to your body from the sting, there aren't usually any lasting effects. There may be effects from the sting in other parts of the body that is not anaphylaxis. Tingly lips and tongue are not uncommon with scorpion stings. There may also be temporary joint pain just after the sting. Fortunately, the pain and symptoms should go away within 20 minutes to an hour.
Wasp and bee stings are somatic toxins. That means there is actual cell damage with the sting. That is why there is swelling, pain, and itching for up to 2 weeks after a sting. You can also feel temporary joint pain immediately after their sting.
